On November 3, the groundbreaking ceremony for a project—with an annual output of 480,000 tons of green fertilizer and a supporting geothermal power station, invested, constructed and operated by a Chinese enterprise—was held in Nakuru County, Kenya.
With a total investment of approximately 800 million US dollars, the final products of this project include green ammonia, as well as urea and calcium ammonium nitrate produced using green ammonia as raw material. Invested, built and operated by China’s Kaishan Group, it is the first green fertilizer production project of Chinese enterprises in Kenya.
At the groundbreaking ceremony, Kenyan President William Ruto stated that the project will use Kenya’s abundant geothermal energy to produce fertilizer, which will solve the long-standing problems of unstable fertilizer supply and price fluctuations faced by farmers, ensure national food security, save foreign exchange, and resist market shocks.
Opiyo Wandayi, Kenyan Cabinet Secretary for Energy and Petroleum, said in his speech that this project is an important part of Kenya’s transformation process and is fully in line with the national development strategic plan.
Cao Kejian, Chairman of Kaishan Holdings Group Co., Ltd., stated that the project will help address Africa’s food security issues by ensuring the stable supply of fertilizer.
